Martin Ballendat was born in 1958 in Bochum. He studied Design at the Folkwangschule in Essen. After 3 years as an employee for the company Sedus at the border to Switzerland he took over the design and development department of the Austrian company Wiesner Hager and shaped their design for more than 10 years.
In 1995 he founded his own studio in Upper Austria and later a second one in Germany. Meanwhile Design Ballendat is a company with sixteen employees working in more than 13 countries. Martin has received well in excess of one hundred awards for his work, including the 2015 ‘Best of NeoCon’ Silver Award for Coza; a task chair conceptualized and brought to the market in collaboration with Boss Design. Martin Ballendat has become a household name for the design and architecture industry, creating award-winning furniture, table accessories, lighting and technical devices.

For more than 15 years lecturer and visiting professor at the university of applied sciences in the field of design in Graz and Salzburg.
He has more than 100 design prizes and other rewards, among them: 19x Red Dot (2x Best of the Best), IF-Award, Best of Neocon Chicago Gold and Silver, Good Design Award, Best of the Best Interieur Innovations Award, Focus LGA Stuttgart in Gold and Silver, Design Plus Award, Materialica Award, IIDEX Gold Award Canada, National Award Saarland and further prizes in Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Japan, China, Hungary and many more.
