Relm

Origin: Geelong, est. 2014

Relm is an Australian design studio, focused on local production using premium materials.

Influenced by modern design across multiple disciplines, Relm’s products are defined by simple clean lines, beautiful proportions and exquisite details.

Jason Stancombe established the brand in 2014 as an exploration of design, materials, technology and manufacturing techniques with the aim to create well considered, creative and functional products.

Relm was recently commissioned to design the dining furniture for the Supernormal Natsu pop-up restaurant, at the National Gallery of Victoria's (NGV) garden restaurant. The restaurant was temporary, part of Natsu, a 10-day festival held at the museum in January 2018. Stancombe used timber for the furniture to complement the bluestone walls and garden location and chose Tasmanian Oak as "it's readily available, sustainably and responsibly sourced, is machined just as we require it, and has minimal checking and misses, providing a superior product."

The Supernormal pop-up site itself had a slightly feminine feel and was designed to provide a relaxed and informal dining experience, which was enhanced through the use of timber. Stancombe often uses it as it brings warmth and an organic feel to furniture. He chose to use Tasmanian Oak as "it is readily available via Porta and complements another timber we work with a lot - American Oak."
